MVP and Rookie of the Year rankings (through week 8)

Patrick Mahomes, Quarterback, Kansas City Chiefs

I’m seriously running out of superlatives to use about Mahomes at this point. I’m almost shocked if he hasn’t thrown four touchdowns in a game. He’s been far better than I think anyone would’ve guessed and the Chiefs continue to roll!

Todd Gurley, Running-back, Los Angeles Rams

Todd Gurley has been a beast this season. I had my doubts if he and the Rams could replicate the magic they had last season but it looks like the Rams offense will continue to be one of the most explosive.

Tom Brady, Quarterback, New England Patriots

Tom Brady had his hands full with Buffalo last night but Tom Terrific came out victorious again.  New England has won five in a row and outside of match ups against Green Bay, Minnesota and Pittsburgh later in the year, they likely won’t be challenged too much.

Drew Brees, Quarterback, New Orleans Saints

Brees didn’t have a typical performance we are used to seeing from him but his team came out victorious in a prime time game against the Minnesota Vikings. On the season, Brees is second in passer rating and has only one turnover on the season which he surrendered against the Vikings.

Aaron Rodgers, Quarterback, Green Bay Packers

Aaron Rodgers gave the undefeated Rams everything they could handle. Had it not been for a late fumble, The Rams might’ve suffered their first loss of the season. Rodgers makes it back onto the list.

Rookie of the Year

1 Saquon Barkley Running back, New York Giants

Barkley has been a consistent member on my list and after taking another look at his stats, I found that not only is he leading all rookies in rushing, but he’s also leading rookies in receiving as well. Shows just how productive he’s been despite the struggles of the Giants.

2 Baker Mayfield, Quarterback, Cleveland Browns

Mayfield came into a tricky situation being drafted by the Browns. They have been historically bad and even worse when it came to QBs. This week it was announced that Cleveland would fire Head Coach, Hue Jackson. Will this help Mayfield and the Brown salvage the season? Stay tuned.

3 DJ Moore, Receiver, Carolina Panthers

The Panthers have been waiting for a play maker on the outside for Newton and the Panthers and they may have that in DJ Moore. He has started to be more involved in the game-plan and it shows after his most recent outing where he caught five passes for 90 yards.

1. Derwin James, Safety, Los Angeles Chargers

James and Los Angeles had this week off but he remains my top rookie on defense.

2. Denzel Ward, Corner back, Cleveland Browns

Denzel Ward has been very impressive. So impressive that he just picked up his first penalty of the season which says a lot about him and his cover skills with the increase in pass interference and defensive holding calls. The Browns have a bright future on defense, will the offense pick it up?

3 Jaire Alexander, Corner back, Green Bay Packers

Adding Alexander to the list after his performance against the Rams. He looked like a shutdown corner, deflecting five passes and helping slow down the explosive Rams offense albeit in a losing effort.
