MVP and Rookie of the Year rankings (through week 5)

MVP

1 Drew Brees, Quarterback, New Orleans Saints

Drew Brees comes in this week at number one. It was a historic week for Brees as he became the NFL’s all-time leader in passing. Brees has quietly put together a stellar career in the NFL and what makes his story greater is the fact he had 25% chance at playing football after suffering a shoulder injury. Congrats to Drew Brees, the new Passing King!

2 Patrick Mahomes, Quarterback, Kansas City Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes demonstrated that he is indeed human after throwing his first interception against Jacksonville this past weekend. His team still came out victorious and now stand at 5-0.

3 Jared Goff, Quarterback, Los Angeles Rams

The Rams will face their first bit of adversity on offense as some key contributors suffered concussions in their last game. It’ll be on Goff and Gurly to make sure the Rams offense keeps going. Currently leading the NFL in passing yards and leading one of the most potent offensive attacks in the league!

Khalil Mack, Linebacker, Chicago Bears

Khalil Mack and the Bears had a bye week but I’m sure somewhere, Khalil Mack picked up a strip sack.

Tom Brady, Quarterback, New England Patriots

After getting Julian Edelman back, Tom Brady picked apart the Colts defense and should find a rhythm very soon. The Patriots will be very scary in the upcoming weeks and that could propel Brady higher in my rankings.

Rookie of the Year

Offense

Baker Mayfield, Quarterback, Cleveland Browns

Baker Mayfield impressed again against the Ravens and led the Browns to a victory in overtime. The Browns now have 2 wins on the season and Mayfield will only continue to get better as the season progresses!

2 Saquon Barkley, Running back, New York Giants

Barkley is a star in the making but there are definitely issues with the Giants offense. He has the ability to make big plays but seems capped by the Giants inconsistencies up front. He is still one of the best rookies this season though!

3 Sam Darnold, Quarterback, New York Jets

Darnold was impressive against the Broncos, throwing for 3 touchdowns. He’s looked ready since opening day and like Mayfield, should continue to progress as the season continues.

Defense

1. Denzel Ward, Corner back, Cleveland Browns

I’ve said it once already and I will say it again. Denzel Ward is a hell of a player! His instincts and ball skills have been something that has set him apart from the other defenders in his rookie class!

2. Derwin James, Safety, Los Angeles Chargers

Derwin James continued his steady play this week as the Chargers defeated the Raiders. The Chargers D has gotten off to a slow start but they looked dominant against the Raiders.

3 Darius Leonard, Linebacker, Indianapolis Colts

Even after sitting out this past week, Leonard still leads the NFL in tackles and has been a pleasant surprise for Indianapolis.
