Tonight at 6 pm, Freshman phenom Trae Young from Oklahoma takes on Devonte’ Graham and the Kansas Jay-hawks. The Sooners have lost their last two Big 12 games and look to bounce back against a Kansas squad who is chasing their 14th consecutive Big 12 title.
The match-up to look out for is obviously between the point guards, Graham and Young. Both are very good leaders for their teams and do so in contrasting ways. Young is the offense for Oklahoma, creating for himself and his teammates. According to basketball-reference, Young has a usage rate of 40! If that holds, would best the record of 39.39 which was set by Jordan Washington of Iona last season. Young holds a great deal of responsibility and is one of the reasons Oklahoma has emerged as one of the best offenses in college basketball. Graham on the other hand, holds a great deal of responsibility on the defensive end for the Jay-hawks as their best perimeter defender. He is also responsible for running the offense and scoring himself.
This match-up will live up to the billing as I believe both Young and Graham will have productive nights. The thing to watch out for is if Young can get on one of those signature hot streak as he has countless times already this season. If that happens, may not be much Graham or anyone could do to contain Young. Another intriguing story line is if Bill Self chooses to use Lagerald Vick on Young at times throughout the game to help keep Graham fresh down the stretch.
Prediction: I see Trae Young having a signature game against Kansas and avoiding their third loss at home. I’m taking the Sooners.
